Luxbright reaches next milestone in the development of advanced microfocus X-ray tubes
Luxbright AB (publ) has reached the next technical milestone in the development of the company’s advanced microfocus X-ray tubes. Having previously verified the tube’s ability to operate at 200 kV, Luxbright has now also successfully verified its power capability of 200 W across the full voltage range from 100 to 200 kV. The result represents another important step towards a finished product for industrial X-ray applications and non-destructive testing (NDT).
In August, Luxbright announced that the company had successfully verified a new prototype for operation at 200 kV. The next step in the development program was to progressively verify the tube’s power capability, focal spot size and lifetime. Luxbright has now achieved the next of these technical targets by verifying that the tube can deliver 200 W across a broad voltage range from 100 to 200 kV.
The ability to deliver high power across a broad voltage range is important in industrial X-ray applications. Different materials and thicknesses require different tube voltages to optimize image quality and contrast. For thinner materials, lower tube voltages are often used, while high power is desirable to generate a high X-ray output, enabling short exposure times and high productivity.
The development program aims to combine a tube voltage of 200 kV and a power output of 200 W with a small focal spot in a compact, glass-based X-ray tube. This combination is particularly relevant for digital industrial radiography, where standards impose stringent requirements on image quality while the industry also demands short exposure times and compact system geometries.
“We are now taking another clear step forward in the development program. Having verified 200 kV, we have now also verified our target power level of 200 W across the entire range from 100 to 200 kV. The result demonstrates that our design can handle this load, giving us a broad and useful operating range. The next important step will be to verify the combination of power and focal spot size, which is critical to the product’s performance in industrial applications,” says David Svensson, Technical Manager at Luxbright AB.
The completed verification further strengthens Luxbright’s technology platform and the company’s ability to develop and manufacture advanced X-ray tubes at its own production facility in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Luxbright sees a potential market for the product in areas including digital radiography and automated X-ray inspection within NDT. The combination of high voltage, high power and a small focal spot can enable high image quality while reducing exposure times and overall system size.

Development work will now continue with verification of the focal spot size, followed by lifetime and stability testing in preparation for future commercialization.
